Women of the 60’s and 80’s had a natural flair for beauty and fashion. Groovy makeup was a big deal. Bold eyes and accentuated cheek bones were important! Eyes needed to be dark and dramatic, with layers of eyeliner and bold shades of eyeshadow in hues of green, blue and purple. Women loved to put on bright red lipstick shades that popped. Eye makeup was made complete with metallic on the eyelids for added shimmer.

How then do you apply makeup to achieve the look of the beauty icons of the 60’s and 80’s?

You can start off by applying liquid foundation in a shade that matches your skin tone, and to smooth out your complexion. Go for a sheer, water-based foundation that blends easily (Tip: try our Liquid Jojoba Foundation). If needed, use a concealer to cover dark spots before applying foundation. Set your foundation with a colorless loose powder. (Tip: our micro fine loose powder in Neutral is oil free, and is essential for setting your foundation.).

Groom your eyebrows by keeping it thick and slightly arched to frame the look. Using your eye shadow brush, apply a neutral matte eye color on the entire eyelid. Blend all the way up to where the eyebrows start for a natural look. Use same eyeshadow and apply at bottom of lashes as a soft liner. If you really want to go for the 80’s look, put on lots of bright green, blue or purple eyeshadow onto your entire eyelid. Applying a bold secondary color can make it even more interesting. Sweep a sheer white shimmer powder across your entire eyelid, followed by a soft taupe eye color along the crease. For an edgier version, use our Eye Perfect Automatic Liner in Ebony inside the inner rim of your eye.
Next, line your lids using black eyeliner. The trick is to imagine you are painting the root of the upper eyelash. Liquid eyeliners, as popular as they are remains a mystery to many women who still have a problem when applying it. However, our  userfriendly Gel Eye Liners takes the mystery out of getting it just right.

Using a detail mini chisel brush, dip into gel liner. Tilt your head slightly backward, and lift the outer corner of your eyes. Rest brush directly on the root of your upper lashes. Wing out the liner in an upward motion to create a straight line that extends just a touch past the corner the eye.

Complete the look using our Super Lash mascara in black to add drama, and to create a heavy look on your lashes. Wiggle wand from side to side towards the outer corner of the eyes, and leave bottom lashes naked.
Using an angled blush brush, apply a neutral blush color  (Tip: try our powder blush in Sandstone or Pink Brown) to create contour, and to bring out your cheekbone. You can combine with our softly shimmer blush in Jacamar for slightly shimmering cheeks. For the 80’s retro look, apply a bright blush on your cheekbones instead (Tip: our powder blush in Grenadine or Scarlet Ibis is perfect for that bold accent). Use a neutral loose powder to soften and blend into your hairline.

Finally, finish off that look with one of our bright red lipsticks in J.L. Red or San Juan and please, skip the lip liner.
