The Evolution of the 80’s: From Bold to Minimal Makeup
The 80’s was the decade of the big, the bold, and the beautiful. Think back to what you saw on the TV screens, the woman stars of the time, even some of the men. The early 80’s brought us Dynasty’s Joan Collins, Charlie’s Angels Farrah Fawcett, music legend Madonna and many more that brought the 80’s to life through their make up styles to hair styles. The 80’s was the decade of the perms and streaks, the funky punk, to the teased and bleached that slowly faded in the late 80’s back to more of a minimalist look with the make up more toned down to a natural look. The 80’s brought on a massive wave or maybe better put rage. Everything and everyone was about making a statement. The hair matched the makeup and the make up matched the hair, the more extravagant the hair, the more extravagant the makeup. Mohawks were matched with punk makeup in bright and shocking colors. Maybe the 80’s were meant to be the year to see just how close the youth could push their parents to the edge of the ledge.
The 80’s had eyes; eyes that defined definition beyond a moderate eyeliner. The heavily lined eyes matched the darkly lined lips. It was all about definition, defining beyond the shock factor, beyond the “wow!” The eyes sported bold colors of blues, greens, and purples, some with all three. Women of business even stepped up their make up with bold colored reds to add that sense of power in what was considered a mans world. It may have been those bold reds that put the crack in the door to give women the equal power, respect, and prestige as the men had. Seriously, think back to Joan Collins as Alexis Carrington. Yes, she was sexy, but sexy or not, her look alone demanded respect.
Bold was beautiful, sexy, and powerful! Madonna in the 80’s is another shinning example of what power the big, brave, and bold could do. Do you remember Madonna’s orange hair? Heck, in the 80’s bold hair colors was probably made purposely for Madonna to begin with. That woman could pull off any color, make it hers, and make it work. Madonna was a no bars held woman then and now.
Evening scene makeup was bright and exotic in nature. The eyes were extended not only by shadows but by liners as well. Blue was in and neutrals were out. It was all about shine and glitter – flare! Bold jewelry was in along with big dangling and colorful ear dressings.
As the early 80’s faded to mid 80’s, much of the bigness and boldness of both wardrobe and make up began to fade. Blues started etching their way out on the eyelids of women and neutral tones starting working their way back in. Hairstyles required less hairspray to maintain throughout the day and eyes were accented rather then boldly defined. The world was evolving and becoming faster paced requiring less time in preparation and more time in the workforce and other matters of life. Minimalist had worked its way back into the lives of women. Even Madonna began to tone it down. Sharply defined eyebrows went out and tweezers became outdated. Heavily draped jewelry disappeared to be replaced with simplicity. As the 80’s merged to the 90’s less was more and more was less and natural beauty was back in. The 80’s will be with us always in our hearts. It gave women a sense of power, that although the look may have grown old, the power it gave remains.
