First came Vaseline, then lipsticks, liners to stain, followed by lip-gloss to replace the Vaseline shine of yesteryear's. Throughout the production of hundreds of thousands of lip colors, today’s products marketed are by far one of the biggest reliefs in women’s beauty routines throughout the world.

Let’s start out with the skinny on lip stains. When lip stains first hit the market it was thought to be the next huge rage in lip wear. Everyone bought at least one lip stain product hoping to achieve that perfect lip color that would last all day and be light as a feather with zero transfer.  Sadly, the first generations of lip stains did not live up to their gimmick.  Rather, although they did stain the lips there was a choice of about three shades of red – red, red red, and reddest!  They stained all right; it was a nightmare to remove.  You put it on and you dang near needed to take sand paper to your lips to remove it.  Only a small percentage of women could get by with the bold red shades available in the lip stains that left the rest of the population of women struggling to remove the lip stain they had hoped would have been their answer to gorgeous lips.  Lipsticks were similar in that the shades were limited. The problem with lipsticks was they didn’t last.  You had to constantly tote around your lipstick and reapply often throughout the day.  That is what made the early promise of the stains so desirable.

Now let’s move on to the skinny on lipsticks and liners.  Lipstick and lip liner was the basics of most women morning rituals. Liners, for the most part, matched their partnered lipstick and were worn in that fashion, unless the makeup trends dictated differently.  Early liners did one of two things; they either stained or bled.  However, with lipsticks having to be reapplied frequently throughout the day, poorly executed lip liners didn’t matter as much. It was when lipsticks began to improve that liners had to step up if they wanted to remain a compliment to women’s lips around the world.

When lip-gloss hit the beauty line, it was quite some time before it was seen in all lifestyles. Vaseline had been the shine of yesteryear's and now there was this high gloss shine that too many seemed like just too much.  The shine rave hit first amongst the high fashion scene and amongst the stars.  It was the youth that brought it into the main stream with mom’s dabbling with their teenage daughter’s lip-gloss in secret first before adding it to their beauty routine.  Lip-gloss has gone through its “ins” and “outs” in the common beauty fashion market with factors such as geographical location, age and fashion playing a role in the trends.

Today’s lipsticks, lip liners, and lip-glosses have come a long way.  They are longer lasting by far requiring far less if any reapplications throughout the day. The color palate available in all three products is so wide I would be surprised to hear that someone could not find the perfect match for them.  Lip stains don’t stain or feather.  Well, not in the fashion they did in the yesteryear's. Now they are light, stain just enough to compliment yet are easily removed at the end of your day.  Glosses come in a variety of shines from high gloss to subtle mattes.  Today, no woman is left behind in the lip world regardless of size, shape, or fullness and that is the skinny, the fat, the thin, the full, the plump, and the pout of lipstick, lip liners, and lip-glosses.
